A lighting console is a ten-year decision. It shapes who can program your shows, which touring riders you can satisfy and how far the rig can grow before you buy again. Creative Stage Lighting carries every major platform, so this guide is less about which is “best” and more about which is best for your room, crew and budget.
Start with capacity, not features
Consoles are limited by parameters (the individual attributes they can control) and by output universes. A modern LED profile can use 40 to 80 parameters, a pixel batten hundreds. Count your fixtures honestly, including the ones you plan to add, then add headroom. On several platforms capacity is licensed: ONYX software keys, Chroma-Q Vista dongles, MagicQ and grandMA3 unlocks all change what a given surface can output.
The platforms
MA Lighting grandMA3
The reference platform for large touring, broadcast and festivals, and the console most often named on riders. The family scales from onPC command wings through compact, light and full-size consoles, with processing units to expand parameters and replay units for backup. Expect to invest in training; the payoff is a deep, consistent system found in every major venue.
ChamSys MagicQ and QuickQ
MagicQ offers strong value and flexibility: MQ70 and MQ250M for mid-size rigs, MQ500M+ Stadium for large shows, Stadium and Compact wings for PC-based systems, and the QuickQ range for schools, churches and venues that want simple, fast control without a steep learning curve.
ETC Eos
Eos is the standard in theatre and education. Element 2, Ion Xe, Gio @5 and Apex consoles, plus programming and fader wings with ETCnomad, share one syntax and show file, with tracking, cue-list and Augment3d visualisation designed for cue-based work.
High End Systems Hog 4
Hog 4 remains a touring favourite with Road Hog, Flex Hog, Stage Hog and Tour Hog consoles and Gig Hog wings. Its programming model suits busking and timecode-driven concert work.
Obsidian Control Systems ONYX
ONYX runs on NX consoles (NX1, NX2, NX3, NX4) and on PC with NX W and NX-P wings, with software keys to unlock universes. It is fast to learn, affordable and popular with houses of worship, clubs and corporate production.
Compulite Vibe
The touchscreen-driven Vibe, Vibe M and Vibey consoles offer a modern surface for theatres and venues. Creative Stage Lighting is Compulite’s exclusive North American distributor, so support and parts come from us directly.
Other questions to settle
- Who programs? Match the platform to your programmers and to the freelancers in your region.
- Backup. Will a tracking backup processor or a second console be required by your clients?
- Networking. sACN and Art-Net output, RDM, timecode and MIDI, and integration with video and automation.
- Form factor. A PC with a wing can serve a small venue better than a console, and travels in a backpack.
- Lifecycle. Software release cadence, training availability and resale value differ between brands.
We stock consoles, wings and nodes and processing units for all of these platforms, and we can quote a complete control system with network, cases and training resources. Talk to us about your rig and we will help you compare.
