Fog Machine Buyer’s Guide: Output, Low-Lying Fog and Fluids Explained

Fog is the oldest trick in the book and still one of the most effective. The right machine depends on the effect you want — a quick burst, a rolling floor of low fog, a continuous atmosphere for a dark ride — and on the room it has to fill. Here is how to narrow the field.

Fog, low fog and haze are different jobs

Fog is a dense, visible cloud that rises and dissipates; it is used for reveals, bursts and “look at me” moments. Low-lying fog is chilled so it hugs the floor — the graveyard and dream-sequence effect — and needs either a dedicated low-fog machine or a chiller/converter fed by a fogger. Haze is a fine, even particle that reveals beams; we cover it in a separate guide. Many buyers who ask for a fog machine actually want a hazer.

Sizing a fog machine

  • Output is quoted in cubic feet or cubic metres per minute. A 1,000–1,500 W machine handles clubs and small theatres; arena and touring foggers such as the Antari F-8 Typhon and Ultratec G3000 run far higher output with fast reheat.
  • Heater power and reheat time decide how often you can cue. Continuous-duty units are built for attractions and fire training.
  • Tank size sets how long you can run between refills.
  • Control: DMX and RDM, timers, wired and wireless remotes.
  • Noise for theatre, and IP rating for outdoor stages (Chauvet Professional Cloud 9 IP, Vesuvio IP).

Making fog stay low

Dedicated low-fog generators such as the Antari DNG-250 and Ultratec Eclipse and LSX low-smoke systems chill the fog so it rolls across the floor without dry ice. Vertical fog jets (Antari M-series, Chauvet Geyser, ADJ Entour) fire plumes upward, often lit by built-in LEDs. For large stages, plan ducting and fans so the fog arrives where the designer wants it.

Fluid matters more than you think

Fog fluids are water-based blends of glycols or glycerin. Quick-dissipating formulas suit bursts and camera work; long-lasting formulas suit atmosphere; dedicated low-lying fluids improve floor hugging. Use the manufacturer’s fluid for the machine — the wrong viscosity clogs heaters and voids warranties. Buying drums or totes cuts the per-litre cost for venues and attractions.

Venue coordination

Fog triggers photoelectric smoke detectors. Coordinate with the venue so detectors can be bypassed or switched to heat during the performance, and keep fog away from exit signage and sprinklers. Most fluids are safe for performers and audiences when used as directed; keep safety data sheets on file.
