LED video walls have become affordable enough that lighting companies, churches and corporate venues are buying their first systems. The specifications are straightforward once you know what drives them. Here are the questions to answer before you buy.
Pixel pitch and viewing distance
Pixel pitch is the distance between LED centres in millimetres. A useful rule of thumb: the pitch in millimetres is roughly the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres, and double that for truly seamless images. So a 2.9 mm wall (ADJ VS2) is comfortable from about 3 m, a 3.9 mm wall (ADJ VS3, Chauvet F3X) from 4 m and a 5.9 mm wall (ADJ VS5, EVS3) from 6 m. Finer pitch costs more per square metre, so match it to where the audience actually sits.
Brightness and environment
Indoor panels at 800–1,500 nits are plenty for stages and corporate rooms. Outdoor and daylight use needs 4,000 nits and up, plus IP-rated panels front and back (Chauvet F4X IP, ADJ EVS3). Also check refresh rate — 3,840 Hz and above avoids scan lines on camera — and colour depth and calibration for consistent panels.
Processing
A sending card or processor (NovaStar MCTRL4K, VX2000 Pro, NovaPro UHD Jr; Martin P3 controllers for VDO creative LED) converts your video input into panel data. Size it by total pixel count and check inputs: HDMI, SDI, DVI or NDI. All-in-one systems such as ADJ WMS bundle panels, processing and cases for fast deployment.
Rigging, power and data
Decide whether the wall will be flown from truss with flybars, ground-stacked on bases or wall-mounted; each needs rated hardware and often a structural check. Panels daisy-chain power and data, so plan circuit loading and spare paths. Curved walls need panels and frames that allow it. Order spare modules, power supplies and receiving cards; a dead tile on show day is otherwise a long night.
Content and control
A media server (ChamSys MediaMaster, ArKaos Stage Server) adds playback, layering, mapping and lighting-console integration; for simple presentation use, a switcher or laptop into the processor is enough. If the wall will be lit for camera, think about moiré and camera framing early.
Budgeting the full system
Panel price is roughly half the story. Add processing, rigging frames or bases, cases, cable, spare parts, a media server and installation or training. Tell us the wall size, pitch, indoor or outdoor and mounting method and we will build the complete bill of materials.
